I have always been quite intimidated by a red lipstick and it wasn’t till about a year ago that I actually fell confident rocking a red pout. I always felt that olive skin tones didn’t suit red as it actually made the yellow undertones in my skin more intense, but after a sales assistant at the Chanel counter encouraged me to try a red lip I realised it was all about the picking the right shade.
So let me tell you how you can rock a red pout!
Orangey reds tend to make skin look sallow as they highlight the yellow undertones in your skin, so this is a colour you want to stay clear of if you are either very pale or your skin has yellow undertones. These kinds of reds suit more bronzed skin shades and are a good option if you get quite tanned in the summer. A favourite of mine is the Revlon Kiss Me Coral Lipstick.

The classic hollywood red a bright intense red with a hint of blue, I think is the perfect red for anyone! This shade is great, because not only does the blue make your teeth look whiter it also brightens up your complexion giving your whole face a healthy glow. My favourite choice for this would have to the Rouge Allure Lipstick by Chanel in the shade Pirate, although the cult Ruby Woo lipstick by MAC is also be a great option if you want something more matte.

Pinkish or Cherry reds are great option for fair skinned girls, they are a fun youthful shade which brightens up pink or salmon undertone complexions and is great shade for the day time as it isn’t quite as dramatic as some of the other reds. However if you suffer from rosacea or have skin which easily flares up, I would stay clear from these shades as they can make the redness stand out even more. My favourite is the Rouge Coco Shine lipstick by Chanel in the Shade Montecarlo. It is quite sheer and has a glossy finish, the perfect option for hot summer days.

Finally the more vampy or wine/burgundy tones reds. These are fantastic for olive skinned girls especially when they have a slight brown undertone. These shades are a great option for the evening or for the cooler autumn and winter months. They help counteract the yellow undertones in skin, but you must be careful with keeping the rest of your face too bare is these shades can make you look tired and washed out. My favourite is the Maybelline Sensational Matte Lipstick in the shade Divine Wine. For fair skinned ladies I would recommend dark reds with a slight purplish undertone as these will bring a hint of brightness to your complexion. My favourite is the Dolce & Gabanna Classic Cream Lipstick in Dahlia.
